About

Sustainability is why JuneShine started as a business in the first place.

JuneShine is a San Diego based alcohol company focused on creating honest alcohol for a healthier planet. The company first started brewing hard kombucha in 2018, and have since ventured into premium canned cocktails called “JuneShine Spirits”.

Operating sustainability is a key component of the brand. JuneShine gives each employee their own set of reusable cutlery, sources the most organic and eco-friendly ingredients to make their products, and operates their brewery on solar energy. They also donate to 1% For The Planet, ship in boxes that plant trees, and are 100% carbon neutral certified.

Challenge

JuneShine has always focused on operating sustainably, but was looking for a way to better communicate why carbon neutrality (or positivity) is important to their customers. As a carbon neutral certified brand, JuneShine was not particularly challenged with how to operate sustainability but was more so interested in ways to better communicate why they were doing so and why it should matter to their customers.

On top of wanting to educate their customers, JuneShine wanted to create engaging experiences that enable customers to actively participate in their mission toward operating as sustainably as possible.

Solution

After discovering EcoCart, JuneShine decided that the perfect solution to their problem was to implement a checkout experience that enables shoppers to not just make their order carbon neutral but to make it carbon positive.

Since the brand already offsets the carbon emissions of their operations on their own, there was no need for them to leverage customers to help them achieve carbon neutrality. Instead, the brand was much more interested in a solution that enabled them to engage with their customers through their mission to be as sustainable as possible.

By leveraging EcoCart’s standard customer-paying carbon neutral checkout on top of their already established carbon neutral certification, JuneShine is able to offer carbon positive orders for shoppers who are willing to pay an additional offsetting fee at checkout. This setup makes it so that JuneShine customers are actually having a positive impact on the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere instead of simply not having an impact at all.

“EcoCart is a great way to focus on climate neutrality and offsetting on a micro level.” says Marketing Manager Emma Hughes “Be prepared to explain EcoCart (hopefully with lots of excitement) to your customers and acknowledge their contribution to making their order climate neutral or positive.”

Result

By getting granular about what it means for an order to be carbon neutral or positive and giving customers the opportunity to participate in some capacity, JuneShine has seen engagement with and focus on their sustainability initiatives skyrocket.

Since implementing EcoCart, JuneShine has seen a 43% adoption rate of their carbon positive order option and their customers have offset more than 2,260,363 pounds of carbon since they first implemented the solution.
