54 Women’s Sustainable Clothing Brands You Should Know in 2024

womens sustainable clothing brands

If you’re like us, you’re always looking for eco-friendly places to shop. When your closet needs a green makeover, you’ve come to the right place! We know a thing or two about sustainable ecommerce with our ever-growing clientele of ethical brands. While they might not be EcoCart customers (yet), we love these women’s sustainable clothing companies!

What does sustainable clothing mean, and what brands are actually eco-friendly?

Sustainable clothing means the garments are created in harmony with the planet. The companies avoid using excessive amounts of water or other natural resources during manufacturing. They’ll use high-quality natural fibers to max out the longevity of each piece of clothing. And, they’ll make sure the people making the products work in safe conditions, and are fairly compensated for their labor.

If you run a clothing brand yourself and are looking to add an eco-friendly checkout option to your online clothing store, EcoCart can help. We have an app for sustainable clothing brands that will show your customers how you’re eco-friendly, making them feel good about their purchases.

What is sustainable clothing?

It can be tough to know which brands are legit and which are jumping on the eco-conscious bandwagon without doing the work. And we know that sustainability in the fashion industry is a big issue. Just look at these trends — we now consume 400% more clothing than we did 20 years ago, and fast fashion brands are pumping out massive amounts of low-quality clothes that get thrown out way faster than before.

That’s where sustainable clothing comes in. A company is sustainable when it accounts for the economic, social, and environmental impact of its clothing production. Sustainable brands will ensure that the raw materials they source are grown with low ecological impact processes; the people who work on the farms and in the factories are paid a living wage and have healthy working conditions. They’ll use energy-efficient technology during manufacturing and ship in eco-friendly packaging along the most efficient shipping routes. Finally, once the buyer no longer wants the garment, they’ll either find it a new home via a resale market, or recycle it into something else. As you can see, sustainability spans the total lifetime of an item!

The difference between fast and slow fashion brands is huge. Trends like these mean it is up to us eco-conscious consumers to vote with our wallets and support slow fashion and carbon-neutral clothing brands.

Why shop for sustainable clothing

An astounding amount of clothing and textiles ends up in landfills each year. The equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing is dumped in a landfill each second, or 92 million tons worth of garments, in fact. These are scary statistics, but as intentional consumers, we can commit to sustainable shopping online with retailers that are committed and transparent about their environmental practices.

By supporting sustainable DTC brands, we can make it more profitable and more common to do right by the environment while getting fewer, higher quality, and longer-lasting garments in the process! It’s a win-win if you ask us.

Things to Look For:

Since the fashion industry hasn’t come to a consensus on what makes a brand sustainable (yet), we have some tips on what to look for to ensure your purchases are as green as possible — thank us later!

Sustainable Carbon Footprint or Shipping

The environmental impact of ecommerce is massive. Clothing and footwear generate up to 10% of global carbon emissions — more than aviation and shipping combined.

When shopping for sustainable clothing online, try to purchase from brands offering emissions reduction options like carbon offsetting for shipping emissions. Some brands go even further, and you can offset the carbon emissions created throughout your item’s product lifecycle — effectively net zero carbon (nice!).

Ethical Sourcing and Quality Labor Practices

Sustainability is often talked about in terms of carbon emissions and the ecological impact of business. But the human impact is just as important. Every person on the planet deserves dignity and the opportunity to live and work without being exploited. Unethical labor practices abound in the fashion industry, so be careful only to support anti-sweatshop brands. Look for reputable certifications like WRAP to be sure.

Environmental Impact in Production

There are many widespread, harmful practices in fashion manufacturing. For example, non-organic cotton is one of the most damaging crops we grow, using 11% of the world’s pesticides and 24% of insecticides. Not only that, up to 20% of industrial wastewater pollution comes from textile dyeing and finishing.

This is major. Also, it’s why we recommend looking for clothing that has recognized certifications like Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Fairtrade or Wear Fair, Bluesign, SA8000, or Oeko-Tex. You can be certain any garment bearing one of these is ethically made, sustainable, and a green choice!

Minimization of Potentially Toxic Impacts

The planet is polluted with harmful and arguably toxic microplastics. Plastic, while useful and even sometimes necessary, is pervasive. It’s literally everywhere. Even in our clothing! Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and polyamide make up almost 64% of our clothes.

And while the plastic itself isn’t going to harm us, when we wash those plastic-derived fabrics, microplastics (toxin-attracting disease carriers) get into the water supply. All that is to say, when you’re shopping for new clothes, the sustainable choice is natural, organic fibers.
